Our Founding Story

Carrying Forward a Legacy of Faith and Service

The Alaula Life Foundation was born out of the lifelong service and vision of Rev. Kenneth Makuakāne, a respected pastor, cultural leader, and award-winning Hawaiian musician.

Rooted in a legacy of faith and service, Kahu Makuakāne follows in the footsteps of generations of his family who served as pastors across Hawai‘i. Inspired by their humility, compassion, and commitment to community, he sought to carry forward this calling in a new way—by creating a foundation that honors life in all its stages.

Through the Alaula Life Foundation, Rev. Makuakāne brings together his passion for ministry, cultural preservation, and community care. From education to end-of-life services, the foundation reflects the values of aloha, kuleana, and mālama ‘āina—ensuring that Hawai‘i’s people are supported with dignity, respect, and love.

The Foundation was established to serve as a light for the community, just as “Alaula” represents the glow of dawn: a reminder of hope, renewal, and the full circle of life.

Our Vision

A future where culture, community, and ʻāina thrive in harmony.

To honor and sustain the full circle of life—from birth to death and beyond—guided by Hawaiʻi’s cultural values, respect for ʻāina (the land), and the interconnectedness of all people.

Alaula is the brink of light—the sacred moment of dawn that connects us to our kupuna and opens a portal of possibility. At Alaula, we honor this guiding light as we walk between ancestral wisdom and modern solutions, creating pathways for sustainable development and full life enhancement. Rooted in Hawaiian values, our work is dedicated to nurturing the land, uplifting community, and fostering balance for generations to come. We believe that when we rise together with the light, we carry forward the knowledge of our past and the promise of our future.
